Paris, France - January 16, 2026: The logo of OpenAI, publisher of ChatGPT, appears on a smartphone screen placed on a reflective surface illuminated by an abstract yellow and pink illustration.

OpenAI is looking for engineers to create innovative image, video, native, and conversational ad formats for ChatGPT, expanding beyond the traditional sponsored unit tested since February.

Three job postings on OpenAI’s job board, recently discovered by Digiday, outline the creation of advertisements in various formats within OpenAI’s new monetization team. This expansion of ad formats could increase the visibility of ads in ChatGPT, potentially impacting the organic brand mentions.

What is Described in the Listings

Two positions are specifically for mobile platforms, one for iOS and one for Android, each necessitating a minimum of four years of experience. They are part of the “Ad Formats” team at OpenAI, which is responsible for overseeing the display and design of advertisements.

OpenAI refers to the third position as a senior monetization and advertising role that is more advanced, involving at least seven years of experience. This role is considered foundational and covers infrastructure, APIs, and user interactions.

Each listing emphasizes the importance of privacy and safety, requiring candidates to adhere to OpenAI’s standards for safety, privacy, fairness, and policy compliance in its advertising systems. OpenAI has made it clear that the success of its advertising plans relies on maintaining trust in ChatGPT.

The Format is Growing Beyond Its Original Scope.

ChatGPT’s latest advertisement features a basic layout comprising a title, brief description, image, and link. According to Digiday, they have recently viewed prototypes that include a bigger image and an optional customizable call-to-action button for advertisers.

OpenAI has tried a particular format that has expanded to seven markets, transitioning from cost-per-impression to cost-per-click bidding using a self-service ads manager. Criteo, one of their initial ad-tech partners, has stated that over 2,000 brands are currently running ChatGPT ads on their platform.

OpenAI’s advertising page mentions that the program will develop to accommodate more formats, goals, and purchasing models. It also outlines a feature where users can interact with ads by asking questions before making a purchase.

The Significance of This

The new layouts might take up a larger portion of the screen compared to the small advertisement box located at the bottom of a response. This may shift focus towards ads and away from the actual response, where natural mentions are shown.

Whether organic visibility can continue to stand out amid the rise in paid advertisements has been a subject of scrutiny since the introduction of these ads. The company asserts that its ads will not impact the content of its responses, but the surrounding environment is now being altered.

Looking to the future

OpenAI has not specified the timeline for testing the new formats. Feedback from test advertisers is influencing the roadmap, indicating that the sequence remains flexible. The recent hiring provides insight into the company’s direction, with the ad format playing a key role in determining the prominence of paid placements in a ChatGPT response.
