Google’s Vice President of Search, Liz Reid, discussed the connection between Google and publishers in an interview. She emphasized the importance for publishers to create content that aligns with readers’ interests to appear in AI search results.
Google states that the decrease in traffic for publishers is not solely due to artificial intelligence.
Reid emphasized that the decline in publisher traffic is not solely attributed to AI, as she also pointed out that people are increasingly interested in non-textual content. This was her response when discussing the current challenges faced by publishers.
Reid responded:
To begin with, aside from AI, there are various other factors at play. Many individuals are seeking new forms of content, such as videos over text, and are turning to social media for information.
A recent Reuters study highlighted the importance for publishers to innovate based on users’ preferences and behavior.
Google states that publishers need to create content that is appealing to readers.
Publishers must create high-quality content that stands out and resonates with readers if they aim to be visible on AI search engines, rather than producing repetitive and low-quality content.
She provided an explanation:
Producing valuable expertise content remains of great importance as people continue to show interest in it.
The more publishers create unique and interesting content that stands out, the more likely people will click through and read it.
How Publishers Can Increase Their Visibility in AI
The interviewers revisited the topic of how publishers can enhance the visibility of their content in AI. They aimed to prompt a response regarding the changing trajectory of AI search, which publishers are worried about.
They inquired:
How can publishers and creators enhance the visibility of their content for AI, given that this is the emerging focus for the industry and publishers aim to reach the appropriate audience for their content?
How can they collaborate with the system to make sure they are following the new rules and getting their content promoted in the appropriate locations at the ideal times?
Liz Reid suggested that creating content that people are interested in reading is the key to gaining visibility.
She provided an explanation.
I believe there are two main aspects to consider. Firstly, ensuring that your content is easily accessible is crucial. Blocking or making it hard to find can be problematic. Utilizing the tools in webmaster console can help publishers have more control and make content more accessible.
We have released new guidelines for website owners and publishers to help them create high-quality content today. Central to this is the idea that if you want people to click on your content, you also want them to engage with and read it.
You should create content that appeals to your audience to be successful, rather than focusing solely on search engine optimization.
The more it incorporates your knowledge and provides up-to-date and interesting content that people are interested in, the more it enhances the experience with its depth and quality, which is highly beneficial.
Lessons learned
Liz Reid’s remarks indicate that Google believes publisher success in AI Search is now reliant on two factors.
- Allow Google to access all content.
- Create material that individuals genuinely desire to consume.
Ignoring the Google Zero fears that even major websites are experiencing, what does this mean for smaller publishers who create content such as recipe blogs, product reviews, travel guides, advice, and news?
