Marketing hiring has decreased more than engineering hiring at 12 major tech companies, with marketing roles declining by 36% and engineering roles by 11% in the same period, according to recent data.
The information comes from SignalFire’s State of Talent Report, which examines major tech companies such as Alphabet and Microsoft alongside a group of young startups. The statistics are gathered from the company’s Beacon AI recruitment tool.
Hiring decreased.
Design saw the biggest decline in hiring, with a 48% drop at major tech companies and a 22% decrease at startups.
Product management hiring declined by 39%, whereas marketing positions experienced a 36% decrease in large corporations and an 18% reduction in startups.
Engineering has fared better compared to other fields. In major companies, there has been an 11% decrease in engineering hiring, whereas in startups, there has been a 7% increase.
The authors of the report think that the higher percentage of engineering recruitment is due to more substantial reductions in other sectors, rather than a surge in engineering.
Attrition rates vary across different departments, with marketing and design experiencing higher rates compared to engineering, which has a lower rate despite a decrease in hiring for support roles.
The Importance of This
This provides an additional point of comparison in a year that has already seen many such instances, although it is limited in scope. It specifically looks at positions within major tech companies and startups in their early stages, excluding the wider marketing job market, agency work, and roles related to search and PPC.
Challenger’s data showed that AI was the main reason for job cuts in the U.S., while SignalFire’s analysis found that marketing saw a steeper decrease in hiring compared to engineering in tech companies.
Anticipating the future
It is unclear if this is relevant beyond big tech. The key is to monitor if the same difference is present in wider marketing employment statistics or is restricted to internal teams of tech companies.
