Fabrice Canel, the Principal Product Manager at Microsoft Bing, is retiring after almost three decades at the company. He announced his departure in a LinkedIn post as a goodbye message to his colleagues, partners, and the webmasters he collaborated with.
“I am stepping down from Microsoft, starting today on July 1st,” Canel stated.
Canel headed the Bing team in charge of scanning and organizing the internet, and he was closely linked to Bing Webmaster Tools. He also played a prominent role in promoting IndexNow, a joint protocol introduced by Microsoft Bing and Yandex in 2021 to inform search engines about fresh and revised pages. Most recently, he collaborated on Bing’s advice regarding the impact of duplicate content on AI search visibility.
He mentioned in the post that he opted to participate in Microsoft’s Voluntary Retirement Program, reflecting on his experience at the company from tackling business challenges with IndexNow to supporting webmasters and publishers amidst the evolving landscape of SEO and AI.
Canel’s announcement had the atmosphere of a grand goodbye reminiscent of Bilbo Baggins’ emotional departure from the Shire in Lord of the Rings.
Why This is Important
Canel’s departure from Bing removes a familiar contact point, but does not indicate any changes to Bing’s site crawling and indexing processes.
Planning for the future
Canel did not specify his successor, and Microsoft has not yet revealed the new leader for the Bing crawling and indexing team or the webmaster communications role. IndexNow and Bing Webmaster Tools are still accessible. The key query is now about the identity of the primary Bing contact for SEO experts.
